July 18, 2024     Time…and Mismanagement

Now I’m seventy, but really I’m in my mid-sixties. Before I moved out here, time didn’t move forward for me for what seems almost a  decade. Luckily, I do not yet look as our parent’s generation did when they hit that terrible number. I wonder why?

Time is something I watch as it comes and goes. The reason I miss everyone’s birthday, I’m sure. Even my own. Look! Here it comes! Renew your drivers’ license! Opps!

I did renew my FOID card on time, though. Weird, eh?

My brother says that it’s not a birthday greeting from me unless it comes late. I  know my nieces’ birthdays are in September, one on the 5th and the other on the 10th. My mom used to call them her “5 and 10 cent girls.” I watch the month come and go; I can never remember who has what dates.

That old chestnut of time moving more swiftly as you get older is actually true. 제기랄 !

It’s been a long time now that my days have been upside down. Bed at 4am, up at 11am. That’s eight hours, but the wrong eight hours. Once you are on that rhythm, it becomes natural. Maybe I stay up – Korean TV - because the TV screen has a better picture when it’s dark. Another reason, if I’m not deathly tired, my mind starts writing the book, my current obsession.

I miss the beautiful and cool morning hours, and the horses go into the pasture at the wrong time of day. When they go out at noon, they’re relegated to the north pasture. Seems cooler to me as it slopes to the north, whereas the big pasture is the flattest ground I have. Annoying that my land is hills everywhere. Plus, that pasture has only grass, whereas the big pasture is chock full of great and tasty things - clover, alfalfa, other good stuff – which are more fattening. Like Greyson, I need to go on a diet, too.

There is one thing that I think will help me eat real food instead of frozen dinners. We used to call them “TV dinners.” They were created in the fifties to watch TV while you ate. Back then, kitchens had no place to eat, and dining rooms actually got used.

Today’s frozen dinners are quite varied; however, they are full of my least favorite thing – broccoli. How I hate that “healthy” vegetable!

Anyway, the one thing that will help me in this regard is my broken microwave. It was about twenty years old. Every time I used it, I’d back away from it. Should have checked it with the Geiger counter.

I looked for a new one, as is natural. Reviews said things like, “this one isn’t too expensive, and it’ll last a handful of years.” WTF? Bugs me no end that today’s appliances are made to break.

Now, it’s pots and pans and the oven. And the air fryer Gage got me for Christmas. That thing is great! I was surprised that popcorn is quicker to make on the stove.

Being forced to actually cook might force me to let go of my hobby of watching produce rot in the fridge.

It’s a new world for me, or just a reversion to the former one, when I would create cookie recipes when I needed something sweet. If they turned out horrible, more biscuits for the dogs!

Where was I going with this post?

제기랄 Rats in Korean. I never make time for that, either.
